Coming out of the hole

The hole? What hole? OK, I'm making up metaphors. In this case, I'm referring to returning to normal from the nightmare that the world has been going through during this year. The invasion of the dreaded Coronavirus, which goes by the slick nickname of "COVID-19," has taken over everything we do, say or think.

However, slowly but surely, we're starting to come out of the fog. Businesses are beginning to reopen after being closed since March. If Supercuts is open I can finally get my hair cut. It hasn't been this long since the '70s. And it would be great to visit a restaurant and eat there like we did in the old days.

Reopening is great, but brings a question to mind: are we reopening too quickly? In some other states, reopening is taking place at an unprecedented pace. As such, the number of new COVID-19 infections has spiked in those states. That's actually quite a setback. Part of it is due to people not practicing social distancing and/or wearing a face covering. I laugh at people who make this political; who claim that their rights have been stripped. There is not enough facepalm for those folks. I touched on this a bit in my previous post.

One example is the fact that theme parks have been given the OK to reopen in Florida. As an avid theme park fan, I follow park news to stay informed of park business. It is my understanding that Busch Gardens Tampa and SeaWorld Orlando have reopened in Florida, but, strangely, seem to be enforcing the rules about guests wearing masks and practicing social distancing quite differently, despite being owned by the same company. All I can say is that I hope that when parks reopen here in California, all park operators get on the same page, and that guests follow the guidelines set by management. If you choose not to, then out you go. Simple as that.

As of this writing, there's been talk about a possible second wave of COVID-19. (Or maybe they'll call it "COVID-20." You never know.) But keeping COVID-19 or COVID-20 in check depends on how slow we can keep the spread of the virus.

The best we can do is to follow the CDC guidelines and do things that make sense. Get over ourselves. Doing the right thing doesn't make you a wuss or a Trump supporter or whatever. It's about showing consideration for the people with whom you share this planet, as well as keeping yourself and everyone else safe.
