I. Don't. Know. How many times have you heard those three words just today alone? Now before I chew them up and spit them out, let me say that there are certainly times when they're quite appropriate. Not everyone knows everything, of course. A lot of times, "I don't know" is the most appropriate response to a question. But what gets me is when a person does or says something that is so insanely stupid---and I mean "want to smash your face on a wall" stupid---and when you ask them "Why?" their answer consists of those three dreaded words: I. Don't. Know.
Now don't get me wrong. All of us have a lapse in judgement now and then and find ourselves saying or doing things that don't win any Best Choice awards. Case in point, just last night I had pizza and spaghetti after noting that I had a blood sugar reading over well over 200. Why did I do that? Not "I don't know," but rather, "I had dinner with my family at an Italian restaurant and needed to eat something." But I was good. A sizeable plate of green salad, but only one roll, a little spaghetti, one slice of very thin crust pizza, and a small slice of carrot cake with as little icing as possible in honor of the birthday boy. And like a good diabetic, I covered it with some extra insulin.
I think the point I'm trying to make here is very simple: Use. Your. Head. Before. Taking. Action. And before taking action in any situation, know why you're saying or doing what you're saying or doing so you can make a wise choice and do the right thing.
Or at least explain it to the cops if need be.
I use "I Don't Know" for the times I don't want to say, it's none of your business or really, you forgot the last time I told you, so, I am not bothering going through the whole story again.
